Our History & Professional Experience

Tony Smith — Funeral Director (Owner)

The experience and professional foundations of The English Funeral Directors are rooted in the career of Tony Smith, whose dedication to the funeral profession began in the United Kingdom in 1986. Tony recognised early in his career that funeral directing is far more than a profession. It is a responsibility and a privilege to support families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. In 1990, Tony obtained his Diploma in Funeral Directing, followed in 1997 by his Diploma in Embalming, further developing his professional knowledge and expertise in caring for the deceased and supporting bereaved families.
 

Tony spent eleven years managing a private funeral home, gaining extensive experience in arranging and conducting funerals with the utmost dignity, respect and attention to detail. In 2001, he was appointed to a senior management position within The Co-operative Funeral Service, where he was responsible for overseeing a team of 27 staff and the arrangement and conduct of more than 1,000 funerals annually. This considerable responsibility strengthened his belief that, regardless of the size of an organisation, every family deserves to be treated as an individual, with kindness, patience and the highest level of professional care.

Bringing British Funeral Traditions to Spain

In 2006, Tony relocated to Spain, bringing with him two decades of experience within the British funeral profession. He initially joined Golden Leaves, helping members of the expatriate community make financial provision for their future funeral arrangements through prepaid funeral plans.

However, Tony soon recognised a much wider need within the British community living in Spain: access to an experienced, English-speaking funeral director who understood British traditions, Spanish regulations and, most importantly, the emotional needs of families facing bereavement far from home.

Building upon his extensive experience, Tony expanded his services to provide comprehensive funeral arrangements, together with a range of funeral planning and payment options designed to suit individual circumstances.

Today, The English Funeral Directors continues to provide a personal, family-led service, combining decades of professional knowledge with genuine compassion and a deep understanding of the communities we serve.
