With over 40 years of experience in the funeral profession, our family-run business understands the difficulties families can face when dealing with unfamiliar procedures, Spanish regulations and language barriers. We have answered some of the questions we are most frequently asked, helping you make informed decisions with confidence and reassurance.

Planning Ahead & Funeral Plans

1. It may be many years before I need a funeral. Why should I plan now?

Although it may feel too early to think about your funeral, planning ahead is one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your family. Making arrangements in advance allows you to express your personal wishes, make important decisions without pressure and protect your loved ones from unnecessary worry. A suitable prepaid funeral plan may also allow you to secure certain funeral services at today's prices, subject to the plan's terms and conditions. Above all, planning ahead provides peace of mind, knowing that your family will have guidance and support when they need it most.

2. Will my funeral plan cover me in both Spain and the UK?

We understand that many British residents living in Spain still have strong connections with the United Kingdom. Certain funeral plans offer dual-country arrangements, providing flexibility should you decide to remain in Spain or return to the UK. However, not all plans provide the same benefits. We will explain the available options and help you choose an arrangement that suits your circumstances, ensuring you understand exactly what is covered.

3. What happens if I die before completing my instalment payments?

This will depend on the type of funeral plan or insurance policy you have chosen. With certain instalment-based prepaid plans, any outstanding balance may need to be settled by your executors or estate before the funeral arrangements are completed. Other policies may offer different protection. We will clearly explain the terms before you make any commitment, so you and your family know exactly where you stand.

4. Can I arrange and pay for a funeral plan for someone else?

Yes, you can arrange a funeral plan for a spouse, partner, parent or another loved one, subject to the plan provider's requirements. We understand that these arrangements can be personal and sensitive, and confidentiality is always important. We can guide you through the available options and explain how correspondence and personal information will be handled.

5. Will my family face additional funeral costs if I have a prepaid plan?

A prepaid funeral plan is designed to provide financial reassurance by covering the services specifically included within the agreement. Once the plan has been paid in full, the agreed services will be provided in accordance with its terms and conditions. Additional charges may apply if your family requests services outside the original arrangement or if certain third-party expenses are excluded. We believe in explaining everything clearly so there are no unnecessary surprises.

6. What happens if my circumstances or funeral wishes change?

Life changes, and your funeral arrangements may need to change too. Whether you move home, return to the UK, change your preference from burial to cremation or wish to alter the service, we can help you review your arrangements. Some changes may involve additional costs or depend on the plan provider's conditions. Our priority is to ensure your wishes are understood and respected.

7. What is the difference between a funeral plan and funeral insurance?

A prepaid funeral plan allows you to arrange and pay towards specified funeral services in advance, either through a lump sum or an agreed payment schedule. Funeral insurance is a policy that provides benefits upon death according to its terms, which may include funeral services or a financial payment. Each has different features, payment requirements and conditions. We can help you understand the differences so you can make a choice that is right for you.

Arranging a Funeral in Spain

8. What should I do if someone dies at home in Spain?

The loss of a loved one is an incredibly difficult experience, particularly when you are unsure what to do next. If the death is expected, contact The English Funeral Directors and we will do everything for you or you have to ring the appropriate medical professional so the necessary medical procedures can begin. If the death is unexpected, contact the Spanish emergency services on 112. Once the appropriate authorities have been informed, you can contact The English Funeral Directors (24/7). We will compassionately guide you through the next steps, explain the procedures and help arrange the funeral.

9. What happens if my loved one dies in a Spanish hospital?

If someone passes away in hospital, the hospital staff will explain the initial medical procedures and documentation (often in Spanish). You can contact us immediately, and we will help coordinate the necessary arrangements with the hospital and the relevant authorities. We will keep you informed, answer your questions and ensure that your loved one is treated with dignity, care and respect throughout.

10. I don't speak Spanish. How will I manage the funeral arrangements?

Please don't worry. This is one of the main reasons The English Funeral Directors provide a dedicated English-speaking service. We understand how overwhelming it can feel to manage unfamiliar procedures in another language, especially during bereavement. We will communicate with the relevant Spanish authorities and service providers on your behalf, explain the arrangements clearly in English and support you throughout the funeral process.

11. Will you organise the paperwork and death certificates?

Yes. We assist families with the necessary funeral registration procedures, liaise with the appropriate authorities and help obtain the relevant documentation, including Spanish death certificates and international certificates for the UK or other European countries. We can also explain which documents may be required for matters in the UK. Our aim is to relieve you of as much administrative pressure as possible while ensuring the funeral arrangements meet the applicable legal requirements.

12. Can we arrange an English-speaking funeral service in Spain?

Absolutely. We believe every life deserves to be remembered in a meaningful and personal way. We can arrange an English-speaking minister or celebrant, depending on your wishes, and help you choose hymns, music, poems, photo slideshow, livestreaming, prayers and readings. Whether you prefer a traditional Christian service, a non-religious celebration of life or a simple private farewell, we will work closely with you to create a fitting tribute.

13. Can we personalise a funeral to reflect someone's life?

Very much so. We believe that no two lives are the same, and every funeral should reflect the unique personality, memories and wishes of the person being remembered. We can arrange beautifully designed orders of service, personal photographs, music, floral tributes, memory displays and television screens for slideshows celebrating treasured moments. Our aim is to create a warm, comforting and memorable occasion where family and friends can come together to honour a life well lived.

14. What is a direct cremation, and can we choose one?

A direct cremation is a simpler alternative to a traditional funeral. The cremation takes place without a formal funeral ceremony or mourners attending the cremation itself. It offers families a dignified and straightforward option, often at a lower cost. Some families choose to hold a separate memorial or celebration of life at a later date, allowing everyone to gather, share memories and say goodbye in their own way.

15. Can my loved one's ashes be returned to our home?

Yes. Following the cremation and completion of the necessary procedures, we can arrange to collect your loved one's ashes and personally return them to you. We can also help you choose a suitable urn, keepsake or cremation memorial. We understand how important this moment can be and will ensure your loved one's ashes are handled with the utmost sensitivity and respect.

Repatriation & Family Living Abroad

16. Can you arrange for my loved one to be returned to the UK?

Yes. For many families, bringing a loved one home to their country of origin is deeply important. We offer a comprehensive repatriation service, coordinating arrangements for the transportation of the deceased from Spain to the UK or another destination where permitted. This includes assistance with the required documentation, embalming where necessary, transport arrangements, licences and coordination with the receiving funeral director. We can also liaise with insurance companies or arrange privately funded repatriations, giving your family reassurance throughout the process.

17. Can cremated ashes be taken from Spain back to the UK?

Yes, ashes can generally be transported from Spain to the UK, provided the applicable requirements are met. Documents such as the death certificate and cremation certificate may be needed, and airlines can have their own transport conditions. We can advise you about the relevant paperwork and available transport options so that your loved one's ashes can be returned home respectfully and safely.

18. What if family members cannot travel to Spain for the funeral?

We understand that family and friends are sometimes unable to attend because of illness, distance, financial commitments or other personal circumstances. Where the venue and facilities allow, we can arrange a funeral livestream so loved ones can watch the service from wherever they are in the world. We can also discuss memorial recordings and other thoughtful ways to help absent family members feel included in saying their final goodbye.

Costs, Insurance & Practical Support

19. What happens if my loved one has no funeral plan or insurance?

Please don't worry. A funeral can still be arranged without a prepaid plan or insurance policy. We can explain the available funeral options, provide a clear breakdown of costs and help you choose arrangements that reflect both your loved one's wishes and your family's budget. We believe every family deserves compassion, dignity and professional care, regardless of how the funeral is funded.

20. How soon must a funeral take place in Spain?

Funeral arrangements in Spain can take place sooner than many families in the UK may be accustomed to. However, we at The English Funeral Directors can delay a funeral up to 7-10days  depending on local regulations, medical documentation, the type of funeral chosen and whether any official investigation is necessary. We will explain the likely timescale and work closely with your family to make appropriate arrangements without placing unnecessary pressure on you.

21. Can I contact The English Funeral Directors even if I am only looking for advice?

Of course. You do not need to have made any decisions or committed to a funeral plan before speaking with us. We understand that sometimes you simply need someone knowledgeable, patient and understanding to explain your options. Whether you have a general question, need urgent help or would like to discuss your future wishes, we are always happy to listen and provide honest, caring guidance.
